Position: Assembly Technician – Dayton, Ohio

About Us:
Scott Industrial Systems is a large fluid power/motion control distributor providing engineered solutions for Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, western Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Tennessee. We are currently seeking an Assembly Technician for our Solutions group in Dayton, Ohio. We distribute products from the world’s leading fluid power equipment manufacturers, including Eaton/Vickers, Parker, and over 40 others. We are a privately held business with nearly 100 employees that has been in business for 73 years.

Position Summary: The Assembly Technician’s primary responsibilities include the timely and efficient assembly, testing, and inspection of manifolds, valves, interchanges, and kitting projects. This position requires an individual with a strong hands-on, mechanical background. Teamwork and communications skills are vital to collaborate with all departments within the company.

Job Functions:
• Work with value-add (VA) management to create and accomplish a daily production schedule as needed to meet promised deliveries.
• Follow established schematics, drawings, Bills of Materials (BOM), and technical instructions as required to produce a correctly manufactured assembly, kit, or interchange.
• Use experience and training to identify and correct potential errors with all assemblies.
• Participate in all technical training as needed to keep current with products and specifications.
• Contribute to the growth and profitability of the Solutions department and the company by contributing time and talent in support of other departments as needed.
• Work with the Solutions design team to review projects as requested. This includes the inspection of BOMs for manifolds, valves, and other kitting projects.
• Provide technical input and inspection support for Solutions projects.
• Ability to follow direction and request assistance when needed throughout construction process.
• Ability to successfully prioritize and complete multiple tasks.
• All other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
• High School diploma (Tech or vocational education a plus)
• 2 – 5 years of mechanical work experience
• Provide your own basic hand tools

Case Study: Test Stand

Steering Gear Test System

Background:
Our customer manufactures pumps for industrial applications. They approached Scott Industrial Systems for two test systems, one to replace an existing test cell, and the other is brand new for the facility to test additional water pumps.

Challenge:
The client’s test system collects data of their water pump’s performance with either a hydraulic or electric motor. The customer provided detailed specifications for tests, HMI screens, and “the mechanical envelope” for the system such that the unit would fit within the dimensions of the test cell.

Methodology:
The customer needs to test different types of pumps, so Scott Industrial implemented a modular solution. Our control solution can connect to an electric motor or a hydraulic motor, depending on the test.

Our customer was very specific about data collection for each pump. They wanted to implement test collection, so Scott designed a system utilizing a barcode scanner and operator number to save test data and analyze results without the need for manual input. This process provides real-time graphing through the HMI unit. This data feeds back to the server network for reports and quality control. Their team can connect remotely to the system from any location. Engineers can pull up test data, set up, adjust their test in real time, and set up new recipes for every new product. Formerly, this process involved connecting the motor to gauges and manually recording data with pen and paper.

In the new system, they can manufacture a pump, bring it into the test cell, and secure it to a hydraulic or electric motor. A recipe screen loads all of the test parameters into the PLC, including pressures, times, and speeds. Once the operator hits the “Start Test” button, the program takes over to perform a low-speed test and then a high-speed test. They can either save the data or repeat the process. Scott Industrial’s system controls the power unit which runs the hydraulic motor and the electrical panel and VFD for the 150 HP electric motor.

Result:
The processor selected is specifically chosen for data logging. It has built-in functions that allow it to connect to the customer’s server. Each of these systems has its own panel that communicates using one EtherCAT cable so there is no wiring back-and-forth on the system. One panel communicates via the network to separate valve panel while another controls the speed. This creates easy and safe installation for electrical contractors. They only need two high-voltage drops for each test cell and two cables between each box.

An old system would have had one main panel and several conduits of control wiring and installation expense and panels. Instead, we use multiple small panels and remote inputs and outputs that can communicate easily.

Case Study: Steering Gear Test System

Steering Gear Test System

Background:
Our customer has an existing test system for remanufactured steering gears for large over-the-road trucks. A test bench system in Canada simulated the drive system of these vehicles.

Challenge:
The customer contracted Scott Industrial Systems to design a new test system for operations located in Mexico. The existing test bench required manual operation and utilized all analog gauges. Everything was measured through gauges and flow control knobs. Operators had to manually change settings for four individual tests on nine different steering gears. This was both time-consuming and created inconsistencies in the overall process.

Methodology:
Our engineers created a more intuitive interface where the gauges and controls are automatic. They utilized a PLC/HMI interface, digital flow meters, and pressure sensing devices. Engineers replaced the analog test system with a computer. An operator selects the unit they want to test, and guidelines and procedures display for each test. Bilingual controls change the language of instructions for operation. 30 test values auto-populate for each steering unit. The system implements a new variable frequency drive with a fixed gear pump which uses different flow rates for individual systems. Operating standards for the output force of the steering gears enable up to 58,000 in. pounds of output torque. Steering unit resistance torque for each test is provided by a pressurized rotary actuator built into the test bench.

The new test bench keeps track of every passed and failed test. The operator can download and export that data, review information on parts and serial numbers, and save 50 full test results per day. Test results are then archived for quality control.

Result:
Our solution met the customer’s need for consistency by automating test bench values. The new system is intuitive, with a digital display that lists specific instruction. This new solution also saves time for the operators as all test perameters are preloaded. This helps result in operational efficiencies that maximize operator output and actionable data from the test bench.

Case Study: Straightening Hammer for a Foundry

Background:
Our customer specializes in heat treating and stamping applications. When flaws or metal deformations appear on parts in the factory, our customer will ensure that those are amended for their clients.

Challenge:
Before contacting Scott Industrial, a laborer at the foundry manually hammered parts straight. This process was time-consuming and often resulted in inaccuracies. Most importantly, the scope-of-work document we received cited repetitive motion injuries to workers. To create the best solution for the factory, Scott Industrial focused on concerns of operator safety, accuracy, and consistency.

Methodology:
We built the hammerhead utilizing a pneumatic cylinder as a stationary hammer to create a proof-of-concept for the full design. Six total versatile axes surround the metal component in order to clamp parts in place. The hammer and clamp have x, y, z axes that move separately. To implement mechanical assist functionality, pneumatic cable cylinders balance the system so there is zero effort to be able to move parts around and properly align the clamp.

Safety is a major concern. Since our customer wanted the capability to move the hammer at any point over the part, we utilized a light curtain so that the hammer cannot engage or operate if there is physical interference (similar to the system on a garage door). Laser cross-hairs on the
part demonstrate where the hammer is going to hit to ensure that it impacts the correct location of the metal. As an added safety, accessibility, and design longevity measure, we installed optical push buttons that do not require excessive force to be utilized. We brought together components from several of our strongest pneumatic suppliers to create this system.

Result:
Our solution provided the same strength and versatility as a human operating the hammer. Our customer benefited from a safer environment for the machine operator, consistent hammer swings, less operator dependency, and overall reduced takt time.
