Electronic Controls – Four-Wheel Drive Control System

Electronic Controls

Four-Wheel Drive Control System

This story comes to us courtesy of Mark Trent, our Manager of Value Added Sales:

Our customer converts large over the road trucks from two-wheel to four-wheel drive. Their customers range from the U.S. Army to snow removal trucks for the local airport. They asked Scott Industrial to update the control system they use to control the engagement of the four-wheel drive system. Each system consists of a transfer case, front differential, and rear differential. Each of these components has various operating states that need to be engaged by the driver from the cab.

Our system had to perform the required control logic, display the system state to the driver and ensure safe operation of the components. Our customer also wanted to modernize the look of the system, make the control valves modular, and have one supplier for everything in the system… Oh, and this quality had to be achieved within a tight budget.

We quoted a system consisting of Humphrey 430 air valves, GS XI03 logic controller, and a Pilot-CC display. As the project gained traction at the customer, they added a wiring harness, mounting brackets, and packaging.

We were able to meet all their requirements and installed the first system on a truck destined to join the snowplow fleet at Salt Lake City’s airport.

Here is their new display within the cab:

Scott Industrial was able to meet our customer’s needs safely, effectively, and within budget. These results will be repeatable for any future needs that our customer has for these components.

Schroeder Industries Announces Hy-Trax

Schroeder Industries Introduces HY-TRAX® Fluid Sampling System
Compact Sampling System with Telematics Option

Schroeder Industries, a recognized leader in filtration and fluid conditioning products, introduces its new HYTRAX® Fluid Sampling System.

Schroeder’s new HY-TRAX® System is a compact fluid sampling system that includes a VSD pump and TestMate® Particle Counter (TCM) mounted on a small manifold block. The HY-TRAX® Sampling Systems eliminate the task of locating a sampling port with adequate pressure and flow. Pump speed is adjustable and the systems are designed to operate on mineral based hydraulic fluids up to 350 cSt. The HY-TRAX® system displays the ISO contamination codes and optional saturation levels.Schroeder Hy-Trax

Schroeder offers the system in two versions, a Manual Control version or a Remote Communications version. The Manual Control version allows the user to manually adjust pump speed to compensate for varying fluid viscosities. The HY-TRAX® Sampling Systems are designed to retrieve ISO cleanliness levels from a reservoir tank or a low pressure line (<50 psi). The compact design is ideal for installations on today’s systems with tight space constraints. The unit can be powered with either 24 Volts DC or 120 Volts AC.

The Remote Communication version adds greater flexibility to the end user. The same VSD pump is automatically adjusted by the communication module to provide optimal flow to the TCM Particle Counter. The fluid sampling system collects data and the communications module transmits this data via GSM cellular communications, at two minute intervals. All data is transmitted through a secure VPN connection and is archived on a secure third level party server. The HY-TRAX® data is displayed on a custom dashboard with user selectable parameters. HY-TRAX® will even send alert emails when programmed thresholds are reached. This will provide maintenance mangers with the visibility and information to pro-actively schedule preventative maintenance on local and remote equipment.

More information on Hy-Trax is available here: Link.

Administration Group: You’ve Got to Keep Moving

Scott Employee Profile:

Kim – Administration Group

Kim Image 2

“Just keep moving. That’s what I’ve learned, you’ve got to keep moving.”

Kim joined the Scott Industrial team in 1988 as part of the File Maintenance Group. This department was responsible for manually entering orders, which would then be filed away into large metal cabinets. Kim described computer technology of that time as “blue things, a screen and a keyboard all in one piece.”

Blue Things

Example image from one of our brochures from the 1980’s

Since the 80’s, Kim has witnessed a lot of technological advancement within our offices. Customer Service became capable of entering orders digitally, and the File Management department merged into what is now our Administration Group.

Kim Image 1

Our admin group in 1996. Kim is in the center of the first row.

One of the most recent changes for the admin group are upgrades to our Dayton headquarters. Through everything, Kim is optimistic and adaptable. “These offices are great, so much brighter, everyone’s closer together in our department. There’s just much better communication.”

Kim’s ability to embrace new challenges is evident from a recent interest she’s found outside of the office. A few years ago, she found a local class called “Beginning to Run”. Although she had always wanted to try running, the Rec Center class gave her the motivation she needed to put it into practice.

“We were going to do the 5k of the Air Force Marathon. I waited too long to sign up for it and it sold out and the only thing that was left was the full marathon.”

She asked her husband if they wanted to run the full 26.2 miles. He agreed. Within a year of taking the course, Kim and her husband completed a full marathon. “We enjoyed it, so we kept it up.”

The administration department encourages of Kim’s ambition. “We’re very close, we’re like family really, and we’ve been together for a long time.”

After many years at Scott, Kim’s favorite part is still the people that she works with. “This company, everyone’s always helpful to everyone. I can’t imagine a better place to work, personally. […] Everyone seems to enjoy working together.”

Kim’s next big running event is the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati this May. She and her husband will be running the half marathon.
