Chet is a degreed electrical engineer from Northern Illinois University, specializing in Power Transmission. He also has an MBA from Iowa State University. Chet has worked in power transmission for 22 years, the last 16 years in fluid power. He’s held engineering positions as well as sales roles in a number of different territories, both in the US as well as abroad. Most recently, (the last six years) Chet was a five-state regional manager for a fluid power distributor out of Mundelein, Illinois.

HydraForce Expands Electronic Valve Driver Family with Configurable ECDR-0506A

Hydraforce ECDRHydraForce has expanded its range of electrohydraulic controls with the addition of the configurable ECDR-0506A electronic valve driver. It can be used to enhance the control of hydraulic proportional valves used for transmission control, vehicle traction control, joystick control, and mobile equipment work functions, such as lifting, lowering, and rotating. This compact driver can be configured for your unique application without coding knowledge.

The ECDR-0506A has a 32-bit processor and six inputs capable of various signal types; four analog and two digital. It has five outputs, four are closed loop and one is open loop. Its 8-32 Vdc voltage rating allows it to handle a range from battery to full voltage. It is also CAN-capable, with a CAN 2.0B communication interface capable of reading CANopen and SAE J1939 communication protocols. A bi-color LED, red and green, provides a quick status check for troubleshooting.

The valve driver is fully configurable using HF-Impulse configuration software, developed specifically for proportional valve control by HydraForce.

Designed for use in extreme environments, the ECDR-0506A driver has a robust, compact, and fully sealed housing that provides excellent environmental protection from moisture and contamination, and Deutsch connectors that qualify for the highest IP67 environmental rating. It has an operating temperature range from -40 to 85 °C (-40 to 185 °F).

The flexibility of the ECDR-0506A driver allows for the device to be easily configured for use in specialized applications, such as fan drives and transmission controls.

New from Humphrey, their iDP Series of inert Diaphragm Poppet valves contain features ideal for hazardous liquid applications. iDP valves are constructed with material suitable for bodily fluids, aggressive chemicals & cleaning fluids and elevated liquid temperatures. The engineered diaphragm feature isolates the liquid media from the solenoid element ensuring long life and sustained performance.

Background information

Our customer, RBT, asked us to develop a radio remote control system for one of their four-wheel drive and four-wheel steer conveyors. Until now, these conveyors were operated by hand. Our sales person did not want to change many hydraulic components so he switched the valve to the proportional version of the venerated V20 series. He spoke to Kar-Tech to see if they could do the whole control system of 15 proportional and 18 on/off functions. Kar-Tech learned that the 15 proportional outputs needed to be current regulated, and called our Manager of Value Added Sales to see if we could do regulation with any of our programmable control systems. We confirmed this was possible, and decided the best system to offer RBT would be a Kar-Tech radio control with a J1939 capable receiver and a programmable ECU from Scott Industrial. RBT’s customer then purchased a prototype.

Project design and programming

Scott’s mobile controls programming team reviewed the input and output requirements and decided to use two Hydraforce ECU-2415 controllers. One for the digital (on/off) functions and one for the proportional outputs. Grouping the outputs allowed us to plan the use of one software service tool to tune and trouble shoot the proportional functions in the hydraulic system. Each proportional coil can have the Imax, Imin, ramp up, and ramp down set via the service tool. In addition to the coils a Creep Mode percent, that controls maximum speed when finely adjusting conveyor location was added to the service tool. The service tool can set 63 different parameters.

The result

RBT’s customer came in several weeks after installation to see the machine operate. They were very pleased with the results of this project. RBT taped the video embedded above of the machine in motion to demonstrate the capabilities of this technology.
